Celebrations

Last Sunday we celebrated Father's Day and Robert's 41st birthday. Nana and Papa and Aunt Jennifer and Uncle Kevin joined us at our house for the celebration.

Robert requested a fruit pizza for his cake and it was yummy!

San Antonio, Part 4

I think I've finally made it to the end of our San Antonio vacation pictures. On the last day we went to Natural Bridge Caverns. The cave formations are really amazing and a reminder of the awesome creative power of our God!

San Antonio, Part 3

Two days of our vacation were spent at Sea World. We had a great time!

The kids were so excited about getting to feed the dolphins:

We all loved the Shamu show:

The kids also loved the pirate show that we went to. They wanted their picture with the villian pirate:

In addition to the shows, we rode a few rides. I got Robert on the Great White roller coaster with me and he actually enjoyed it, so I had to get a picture of us in front of it:

We saw lots of animals around the park:

We spent a good bit of our time cooling off in the water park:

Everyone's favorite activity was the wave pool:

Kenna and Cullen loved the activity pool. Camden wanted nothing to do with slides, but I convinced him to ride with me on this small one, and he loved it.

San Antonio, Part 2

We spent one day of our vacation at Fiesta Texas. It wasn't too crowded and they had quite a few rides that were "in between" - not little kid rides, but not too big either. None of my family (except me) likes roller coasters, so it was great having something that everyone wanted to do.

One of the favorites was "The Hustler", a spinning teacup-type ride. There was never much of a line at this one so we rode it several times:

I just about made myself sick trying to take pictures while the rest of the family worked to spin us as fast as possible, but I got a few great shots like this one. (I don't think there's anything better than seeing my family smile and laugh!)

Kenna and Robert were the only ones to brave "The Wagon Wheel":

Since the lines for most of the rides weren't too long, I ventured on my own a few times to ride some of the roller coasters and other rides that the rest of the family didn't want to do. On this boat ride, I was the only one in my boat. It felt a little silly, but it sure was fun!

The kids thought that drop looked a little too scary, but were happy to stand on the bridge at the end of the ride and get splashed. Robert stayed a safe distance away to take pictures.

The kids still love to meet the characters. I thought this picture with Scooby Doo was pretty good:

Fiesta Texas also has a water park and we spent the afternoon there when it got too hot to enjoy the rest of the park. Even though they both dislike heights, Cullen and Robert both enjoyed this racing slide. They are in the middle two lanes, Robert on the left and Cullen on the right. (You can click on the picture to see it larger).

As with the roller coasters, I had to go off on my own for the "big" water rides. This one required at least three people to ride, so this nice man and his two boys let me tag along with them:

After I rode with the family, there were two girls looking for a third person to ride with them. It was so much fun that I happily agreed to ride it with them!

San Antonio, Part 1

We spent last week on vacation in San Antonio. As usual, we took a lot of pictures, so I have some catching up to do on my blogging.

The first day of our vacation we went to Brackenridge Park. It was very hot and crowded, so we were thinking that going there wasn't such a good idea, but then we saw this adorable duck family and that made it all worth it. We stood there watching them for quite some time.

We also visited the Japanese Gardens that are a part of the park:

This was the kids' first trip to San Antonio, so we spent one day doing all the typical tourist things, like visiting the Alamo:

We did some shopping at the Mexican market and had dinner on the River Walk. After dinner we enjoyed a nighttime view of the Alamo:

First Week of Summer Vacation

Whew! I am loving this break from the routine of school, but so far things sure haven't slowed down any! Here are a few of the activities that have been keeping us busy this week:

"Reading with Ringling" clown performance at the public library:

Free Movie Wednesday at a local theater:

Washing the car (Cullen declared this the most fun "chore" he's ever done). The kids keep finding new uses for those water squirters that we got at the dollar store for Cullen's birthday party - they have proven to be a great investment:

Kenna spent several days this week at Nana and Papa's house. Nana sent her home with a small sewing machine. She couldn't wait to show us her new skills - I have been really impressed. She's becoming so independent. As soon as she got home she went in her room, cleared of her desk (no small feat!), set up her machine, and got to work making a blanket for Cullen.

We've also spent some time at our neighborhood pool:

In addition to all this fun, we've embarked on what I'm referring to as "Life Skills 101". I have been guilty of doing too much for my kids, instead of teaching them to do things for themselves. For awhile now they've had some basic chores to do, but I've decided it's time for them to learn to help out in a more substantial way. They've been making their own breakfasts and lunches most of the week and on Thursday we cleaned house. It probably took twice as long as it would have for me to just do it by myself (probably the main reason I haven't worked on teaching them this kind of stuff in the past), but I know the time invested will pay off eventually - if not for me, then for their future spouses!

They've had really good attitudes so far, except for Camden when we were working on folding clothes. He said it was just too hard and he didn't need to learn anyway, because he wasn't going to have to fold clothes when he grows up. I asked him why not and he said he'd be at work all day and his wife would fold his clothes like I fold Daddy's clothes. Oh, my goodness! I can see I have some retraining to do with this one!

More End of School Fun

After swimming at a friend's house Thursday afternoon, the kids hadn't had enough water, so they got out the water squirters and played with the neighbors in our front yard.

Dixie was in the house whining to join the fun, so tied her to a tree. She loved trying to catch the water in her mouth! She looks a little bit ferocious and maybe a tad rabid, doesn't she?

Here's a video of it - it kind of looks like the kids are being mean to her - but she honestly couldn't get enough!

Pool Party!

We celebrated the end of school on Thursday with a pool party at a friend's house. Great fun!

Ice cream sundaes - yum!

My friend Kimberly had a baby in March. He was born with a full head of long hair and hasn't lost it - everyone loves to create hairstyles for him. Isn't he adorable?!!
